Gambia election: Apex Court adjourns hearing on election petition

Gambia’s Apex Court has adjourned the hearing of the December 1st election petition filed by President Yahya Jammeh to annul the just concluded Presidential elections.

President Jammeh who earlier conceded defeat and accepted the outcome of the election by head opposition, Adamma Barrow, reversed his stand in a televised statement barely a week later.Jammeh who had ruled Gambia for 22 years was to relinquish power to Property Developer, Adamma Barrow come January 18th, when his tenure was to expire but has refused to hand over the reins to a victorious Adamma citing irregularities and lack of Summons for Chief Defendant ”“ the country’s Independent Electoral Commission.Presiding Judge, Nigerian-born Fagbenle announced, “In view of the case that the Electoral Commission is not served, I hereby order that the case is adjourned till 10th January”Speaking to journalists afterwards, Edward Gomez, Jammeh’s Lawyer, exhibited faith in the ruling, saying “”¦.It is the ruling of the court that matters, and I believe we will all abide by it and respect it.”President-Elect Adamma Barrow who won the election with a landslide victory of 54.4% against Jammeh’s 36.6% promises a transitional government “if he wins.”He will be inaugurated come January 19th 2017.
