The recent flag-off of the clean-up of Ogoni, Rivers State by the Federal Government has been condemned by a group known as Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria, ERA/FOEN. The group further argued that apart from the usual fun fair, there was no serious commitment by the government to the exercise. Speaking through its Executive Director, Godwin Ojo, the group expressed sadness over what it described as the lack of commitment by the FG to the clean-up of Ogoni during the World Environment Day in Abuja. Ojo asked the FG to come out and state in a clear and unambiguous term the commitment of the government and Shell Petroleum Development Company in the exercise. But, the Special Adviser to President Buhari on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Brig. General Paul Boroh (retd) insisted that the clean-up of Ogoni has both environmental and economic lifelines for the Niger Delta.
