The Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) has extended the date for the planned industrial action by its members. This was due to the intervention of The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, James Ocholi SAN. The health workers had planned to embark on a nationwide strike yesterday after the expiration of an earlier 7-day ultimatum. They were demanding implementation of past agreements reached with the government. However, the union had prolonged meeting which had in attendance: the Minister of State, Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire; Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. (Mrs) Amina Shamaki; Permanent Secretary, Service Policy and Strategy Office In the Office of The Head of The Civil Service of The Federation, Mrs Nuratu Batagarawa; Chairman, National Salary Income And Wages Commission, Chief Richard Egbule, and the executive members of JOHESU led by its Chairman, Comrade, Biobelemoye Josiah. The Minister, James Ocholi, in his remarks appealed to the leadership of JOHESU to give him 30 days to study the antecedents of the issues, so that the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari can proffer lasting solution to the protracted industrial unrest in the health sector. Meanwhile, the trade unions after extensive deliberations and due considerations from both sides, conceded 21 days’ extension for the commencement of the proposed industrial action, and the Minister reportedly accepted.
