Three men drown and five others were declared missing in a boat mishap in central India on Monday in the course of taking pictures while journeying to their destination, according to a police source. The incident occurred on Sunday evening, at a time when about 10 men between the age range of 21 and 28 years were on a fishing boat on Vena River around the city of Nagpur.Chandrashekhar Bahadure, who is the Area police chief confirmed there were two survivors brought out by the boatman while three other bodies were removed Monday afternoon.“During initial investigations, we found that the group was busy taking videos and selfies on the boat that is suspected to have caused the tragedy,” Bahadure stated.“Survivors say the boat lost balance and overturned when a number of men came to one side to pose for either selfies or videos. He added that: “The men had also posted a video on Facebook minutes before the boat tipped over.”According to the police account, divers and national emergency response team were called in the rescue effort but it was not certain there would be survivors.New research also showed that India records the highest number of selfie-related deaths. It was gathered from a study by Carnegie Mellon University that from March 2014 through September 2016, 127 “selfie” deaths occurred around the world, 60 per cent of which India was accountable for.Police in Mumbai declared 16 “no selfie zones” in 2016 in an attempt to stop a recurrence of death following the death of a female student who drown when taking a picture of herself.
