Recently, the workers were in dispute with the mega construction company over the laying off of over 7,200 workers without payment of their entitlements. The assembly was called upon by the workers to prevent the company from evicting them from their camp apartments. The committee members went round the workers’ quarters which were found to be desolate, dilapidated and unfit for human habitation. The Camp Manager, Mr. Udeme Umoh, when asked by the committee why the apartments were in such horrible states replied that complaints were filed to the management for repairs but the structures were soon vandalized after repairs.Efforts by the committee to get to the Germans’ section were denied as the section was described as restricted.Pwajok addressing newsmen after the visit expressed regrets for not gaining access to the restricted section but ensured to pay another visit to the camp and he also ensured to report the findings to the house. The workers filed a petition on November 23 at the National Human Rights Commission, the same day the members of the house visited the commission on the matter.
