Julius Berger kick starts repairs on international airport runway in Abuja

By

The official closure of the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport Abuja has been signaled yesterday with the marking of the runway by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, the contractor billed to carry out repair works there. This is also signaling over flyers that the runway will not be available even for landing of any sorts. It was gathered that the contractor has deployed its machinery to site and has since started work. This has necessitated all scheduled aircraft and charter operators to relocate to Kaduna. There was processing of passengers at the terminal building before they were conveyed by the federal government Charted Chisco buses to Kaduna free of charge. The latest development was confirmed by the International Terminal Manager, Mrs. Hajara Musa, who confirmed that work has begun on the runway.“I can confirm that Julius Berger Plc is on ground carrying out the rehabilitation as you can see their equipment already working,” she said.A cross section of the passengers were captured at the international airport.A member of Delta State House of Assembly, Johnson Erijo said “The arrangement for now is perfect though I don’t know what it will become later but what I’m experiencing of the operation now is seamless and working fine.”One Lagos bound passenger, Mr Shittu Akeem said “So far, I have not seen anything wrong with this arrangement. No money is being charged for the transport from Abuja to Kaduna.”Prof.  Dolapo Lufadeju also added his voice: “The screening of passengers is also fine by me as that is for our safety. The important thing is that there may be no need to do another screening in Kaduna since all of us have been screened in Abuja.”The chairman, Air Traffic Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSAN), Abuja airport, Emmanuel Kerri, said “Some of our operational workers left on Saturday while some left on Tuesday.”
