Disclosing this at a Press Briefing to discuss issues at traffic management, the acting Honourable Commissioner, Prince Anofiu Olanrewaju Elegushi noted that all commercial vehicles wishing to drop passengers at Adeniji and Sura Junctions on the route should detour into Idumagbo and Sura inside before turning to rejoin the road. He disclosed that the State Government has plans for immediate enforcement of the “No Bus Stop Order”. He added that the stretch inward Lagos needed to be managed more effectively. In a similar vein, the Commissioner also maintained that extortion by Council Officials with respect traffic offences will be curbed. He noted that the Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas are not constitutionally empowered to arrest and fine motorists. Citing several complaints and allegations evidenced by fine receipts, Elegushi said the role cannot be an institutionalized enforcement but rather traffic movement assistant. He added that only the Nigerian Police, The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) are so empowered. He urged Lagosians to also report any such illegal activities to the Ministry of Transportation vide e-mail LAGOSMOT2015@GMAIL.COM, LAGOSMOT2015@GMAIL.COM>* or call this number *09094555222*. The Commissioner also announced a new regime of Official Number Plate which he said, the State Government has deemed it necessary to review the official number plate regime so as to ensure better identification of Government vehicles and end the era of abuse of the official number plates and its negative consequences on security. Elegushi said the State Government was aware of challenges of such official number plate being randomly available to persons who should not ordinarily have access to them. Thus, the need for a new regime of Official Number Plates that is billed to come on stream by the end of the first quarter. He explained that under this arrangement, official number plate would no longer be transferable and targets the entire Lagos State Public Servants. Furthermore, the Commissioner harps on the need for the State Government to regulate entrance into the operations of Taxi or Mile to Mile carriage in the State. This according to him is as a result of many who are operating without appropriate licenses and authorization. He described the continued operation of “freelancers” called “kabukabu” as infringement of the State’s Year 2012 Road Traffic Law which makes provision for the condition for operation a taxi in Lagos. He also argued that the use of lorries/vans and trucks for transportation was totally unacceptable. He maintained that it is common practices to find Lorries, trucks loaded up with equipment or with animal while at the same time carrying humans. He said this non observance of safety regulations must stop adding that there is need to accord and treat each other with respect that humans deserved. Elegushi said lorry owners or company who wish to use their Lorries to carry their workers must display maximum passenger capacity.
