LASU SUG Appeal to Management to Review Campus Shuttle Ban

By Correspondent

Lagos State University Students Union (LASUSU) has made a special appeal to the management of the institution to review its decision to distance itself from the activities of the external commercial buses operating on campus under diverse business names. The President LASUSU, Tayo Sekoni, made this appeal when he granted an interview to newsmen, stating that though the management’s decision was targeted at rebranding the image of the university, there was need for scraping the existing ones.Last week, the authorities of LASU released a statement; warning all students to disassociate from running any form of campus shuttle business, adding that failure to do so would attract sanctions.Mr Oluwafemi Obayori, the acting Dean, Students Affairs Division of the school who gave the note of warning emphasised that any student who was interested in becoming a bus driver should not bother coming to the university because the university would not relent in its transformation agenda.Obayori added that the decision became necessary as the incessant clashes between some students of LASU and operators of such vehicles. However, Sekoni assured the press that the union is working tirelessly to reform the operations of the external shuttles. He reiterated that the reform would benefit all LASU students and also eradicate all forms of rancour between the bus operators, the National Union of Road Transport Workers, and other relevant bodies.“I believe we have a reasonable management, if we inform them of the reform, and how it would benefit the students and the entire LASU community, I’m sure they would reason with us. And so we are pleading and assuring the management that everything would be addressed under the new reformation exercise,” Sekoni added. The Welfare Director of LASUSU, Abisogun Akeen lamented that the management never informed or notified its leadership, but he disclosed that the union has up to 30 buses operating in Lagos city. He said the management’s decision if not harnessed would affect the welfare of the union.“We consider the management’s decision to be an encroachment on the autonomy of the Students Union body.“The buses generate revenue for the union and also aid students’ movement at subsidised price since LASU is a non-residential institution. Whenever we are going out on students’ activities, it helps us too. And so, we are pleading for their understanding.” Akeen disclosed.
