Lawmaker Wants FCT to Be Treated as a State

By Correspondent

Alhaji Zachari Angulu-Dobi representing Abuja South in the House of Representatives has stated his determination to work towards ensuring that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is treated beyond what it is now but as a state embedded in the constitution of Nigeria. He made this known in an interview maintaining that the biggest issue for FCT indigenes is that they want the FCT be treated as a state. He argues that the constitution stated that FCT shall be treated as it was one of the 36 states in the country, adding that for him, it means that FCT should enjoy everything a state in Nigeria enjoys. “The biggest problem in FCT is that FCT be treated as a state. The constitution said that FCT shall be treated as it was one of the 36 states in the country. For me, the interpretation is that FCT should be treated as a state. “But many others can say that the ”˜shall’ in the law should be defined. It has been given so many definitions, for and against. We owe it as a duty to define it to be in our favour. I believe if we are able to do that, other things will flow,” he said. Angulu-Dobi then pledged to meet with relevant stakeholders, so as to look into the constitution to the possibility to short change the people of FCT. He further went ahead to state that the indigenes of FCT have sacrificed a lot for the country, by giving out their lands, adding that they need to be recognised and represented in the helms of affairs.
