Lekki Gardens Buildings: Lagos Government Begins Integrity Test

By Correspondent

Following the collapse of the Lekki Gardens building, the Lagos State Government says it has commenced stability tests on buildings constructed by the Lekki Gardens to ascertain their structural integrity. It would be recalled that a building constructed by Lekki Gardens had recently collapsed in the Lekki area, killing no fewer than 35 persons. This had earlier made the state government to subsequently order that other buildings constructed by Lekki Gardens be made to undergo integrity tests to avoid another collapse. Mr Rasheed Balogun, who is the acting General Manager of the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory, revealed in a statement on Sunday, that tests will be conducted on some buildings without sending away the occupants in the Lekki Gardens Estate in order not to cause them discomfort. Balogun said the decision to carry out the tests was a directive from Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, who also seeks to ascertain the “liveability status” of all buildings constructed by Lekki Gardens.Balogun further stated that the test would be a “non-destructive test and partial destructive in some cases”. He said the test would also extend to other construction sites and estates in the Lekki area to confirm their status. He then advised that the occupants of structures within the Lekki Gardens Estate, should comply with the vacation order of the governor, and vacate the buildings until investigations were completed, stating that the life of every Lagosian is important to the government.
