Measles has been eradicated in Maldives, Bhutan – WHO

Bhutan and the Maldives are reported by World Health Organization to be the first countries to eradicate measles.  There has been no report of measles outbreak by the Maldvies and Bhutan since 2009 and 2012 respectively, WHO stated. Poonam Khetrapal Singh, regional director of WHO Southeast Asia reported that WHO appreciate the effort of the countries in achieving a significant public health.40 years ago an immunization program was developed by the two countries, alongside a strategy of mass vaccination of high-risk populations. The achievement of this success is as a result of the strong political commitment and the effort put in by the health workers, officials and partners at all levels, Singh said.Deadlines have been made by WHO that by 2020 measles should be eliminated in the 11 countries which are categorized as the Southeast Asian region. 620,000 measles death have been recorded in 2016 alone despite the vaccination backing of the 11 countries, WHO stated.North and South America was announced measles free, until last month Minnesota reported a measles outbreak. Measles, a viral disease which is spread through coughing and sneezing, can lead to pneumonia, brain inflammation, hospitalization or death, mainly among children.
