Memoirs of a Cabin Crew

Memoirs of a Cabin Crew

By James Hughes

As I resumed for work early in the morning soaked and wet, I thought about it, “When will this end?” Waking up at four thirty in the morning to make sure the outlet was open on time and the meals for the day were also ready on time. Oh! Wait! Just because the heading says “memoirs of a cabin crew”, you think I was just going to start with a cabin crew story just like that? No dearies. I have to tell you the origin of my life as a cabin crew. I am sure you have seen many movies, especially those about super heroes. These days, the producers go back to making the “origin” movie. So, why spend time telling you about my life as a cabin from the onset, without telling you how I became a professional flight attendant?I was born Olakunle Sofela and I studied marketing in school. After school, I was fortunate to get a job with one of the foremost fast food restaurants in Nigeria as the front office supervisor. Never mind my earlier frustrations in the first paragraph, I was actually in love with the job. It gave me the opportunity to meet different people and sell stuffs. We were always busy. Believe me, I love being busy. This job also offered free lunch, and we the employees were provided with uniforms. I hardly ever bothered to wear the clothes in my wardrobe. I worked 6 days a week with a day off. So I hardly ever had to wear anything other than my nightwear or just my briefs and a t-shirt.Me whining that morning was just me being tired of waking up early, and with the rainy season, I was always -or can I say, mostly drenched. I was somewhat tired of it.“Super!” called Ojoma, the sectional head of the cashiers. The name “Super” was an abbreviation for Supervisor, which the staff had formulated for all supervisors working within the company.“Su-peer” she called again. “Yeeees” I answered. “What do you want, jor”“Where is your mind?” she inquired. “Well, I was just lost in thoughts” I replied“What are you thinking of?” she continued. “Ojoma, leave me! I am wet and cold. Please do you think I can get a cup of tea?” I responded almost angrily.“Yes now, just bring money. Let me send one of the girls.” She said. “Ok! But I really want it like yesterday o” I responded.“Oh wait” I called out to her. “Please where is the Newspaper for today?”“With the accountant.” She replied. “Please help me get it.” I said with a grin.Let me fill you in on this secret. The newspapers then, especially the Guardian happened to be a source of vacancies for Job seekers. Early in the morning, there was always a scramble for it. At the restaurant, it is the property of the front office. So I used to my authority and influence as the front office supervisor to ensure it always got to the front office. Partly because I wanted my customers to read it, but majorly because of the Tuesdays and Thursdays vacancies.  “Here you go sir.” said Charles our senior dispatcher and very nice guy. I was always impressed with the way he talked, and I always knew he was going to be successful.“Thanks” I replied as I quickly flipped through it. Just as I opened the center spread, I saw a huge two page advert with the heading “Who The Cap Fits”. This was an advert seeking for people to be members of a cabin crew.“Nice” I thought. “This is the kind of job I had been dreaming of”. Looking through the requirements, I felt like I could do it.I asked Charles to get me a pen and a piece of paper as I jotted down the address to the location of the “mini interview”, they had scheduled for Friday.I thought to myself, “I can’t miss this. It is at Federal palace Hotel, Victoria Island. Wait, can I swim without being afraid? I know I can swim, but can I do 50 meters unaided? Well, I will still try and see. This is my dream job. It is an opportunity to travel the world, meet people and get paid while doping it”. Right then, I started looking for an excuse to miss work that Friday. The time for the interview was 10 am and I was supposed to be working morning shift at the time. “What do I do”? I asked myself. “Will my other supervisor be willing to switch shifts with me? What will I tell her”?By Tolumilade Sogbesanfor Uptownbros
