Military Campaign against Boko Haram Successful – Interior Minister

By Correspondent

The Interior Minister, Abdulrahman Dambazau on Tuesday declared that the Nigerian military’s onslaught against terrorism has been very successful. Speaking at a media roundtable, organised by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), in collaboration with Ford Foundation, USA on developing effective policy framework to address the situation of victims of Boko Haram in Nigeria, the minister who was represented by Mr Dauda Mura posited that the security agencies were initially not prepared for insurgency. According to the minister, ”˜The action of the insurgents has brought a serious headache to the government, and it will be unfair to blame the government for not being able to tackle the menace head-on. Nigerians have also been negligent and as a result, insurgency was allowed to grow big in the country today. ”˜The present government is making serious effort to confront the problem and potency of the Boko Haram sect. ”˜Government is also doing everything to mobilise security agencies to liberated areas in the northeast.’ While charging Nigerians on the need to develop more trust in government, Dambazau expressed sadness over the attitude of some undisclosed Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) to make money from the challenge of insurgency in the country. On his part, the governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode maintained that the Boko Haram insurgency has no doubt wreaked unimaginable havoc since 2009. The governor who was represented by a Director in the Ministry of Special Duties, Bisi Shonibare said, ”˜According to available reports, not less than 20,000 lives have been lost with over 3 million people displaced and being sheltered in different camps across the nation. ”˜As the military makes steady progress in winning the war and liberating the territories previously under the stronghold of Boko Haram, the next phase is the task of rebuilding these communities and reintegrating the victims particularly children, women and the elderly into the society. ”˜The overall objective will be to restore hope in the minds of the victims and avoid acts of commission and/or commission that could result in more complex crisis situations in the near future.’ Earlier in his opening remarks, SERAP’s Executive Director, Adetokunbo Mumuni had explained that the roundtable will discuss issues concerning how to address the situation of the victims of Boko Haram, and promote access to justice and effective remedies for victims of the conflict in the North East Nigeria. He added ”˜The roundtable is part of our organization’s project to promote accountability and reduce violence and associated human rights violations in the country as well as promote peace, security and effective respect for human rights including of Internally Displaced Persons and other victims of violence and armed conflict.’
