The Senate yesterday interrogated the Ministry of Education over the N10bn increment in personnel cost of the parastatals under its operations proposed in the 2016 budget estimate. The Minister of State for Education, Professor Anthony Onwuka, who defended the budget before the Senate explained that N98bn was proposed for personnel cost of all parastatals under the Ministry of Education this year, as against the N88.1bn budgeted last year. Professor Olusola Adeyeye (APC, Osun Central), a member of the Committee was appalled by the increase. He noted that whereas the main Ministry, colleges of education, polytechnics, and universities have their personnel cost slashed, that of the parastatals has been increased. However, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Folasade Yemi-Esan, who responded to the query revealed that the personnel cost was collated based on the submissions from the institutions.
