Murder: Suspect Admits Killing Victim

By Correspondent

A twenty-six-year-old man, Patrick Onyekachuku Nwanchuku, who was alleged to have taken the life of a seven-year-old boy, on Wednesday admitted before a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja, that he killed Ayuba (deceased) and dropped him in a soak-away in the estate. He admitted before the court, presided over by Justice Atinuke Ipaye. Led in evidence by the Chief State Prosecutor, Akin George, the defendant said, “I was carrying my young friend on my shoulder and we were walking towards the door, when we both fell because the floor was slippery. I tried reviving him by pouring water on him, but he did not wake up. “I shook him and tapped him, but he was dead. At that point, I don’t know what to do at the moment and I was scared of what would be done to me if they find out what happened to Ayuba. “I did the only thing that came to my mind by disposing the body into the soak-away on the street.” It would be recalled that Onyekachuku was said to have killed the victim, who happened to be a neighbour’s son on Momako Estate, Abaranje road, Ikotun Lagos. Reports show that when the incident was discovered, all the neighbours rushed out in search of the victim, but were unable to locate his whereabouts, until after a week when Onyekachuku’s uncle called the deceased parent to come to his house. The defendant was then arrested in his uncle’s living room when the uncle showed them a ransom letter that he found which was written in the suspect’s handwriting. According to the letter, the suspect had demanded for a N5m ransom, stating that he kidnapped the deceased (Ayuba). Investigations also show that Onyekachuku strangled Ayuba to death and put him in a bag and later disposed him in a nearby soak-away in the estate. During resumption of hearing in the case, the defendant informed the court that he lied against one Jamiu, whom he claimed to be a ritualist as being responsible for the death of Ayuba. Onyekachuku said, “I was not comfortable seeing the family and the whole neighbourhood searching for him, but I was also too scared to tell them what happen. “I did not write any letter to the deceased family, I am not aware of any letter presented by my uncle.” Further hearing on the matter has been adjourned till April 18, 2016.
