Nigeria offers 335 foreigners certificate of citizenship

Certificates of citizenship has been offered to 335 naturalized citizens by the Ministry of Interior.Lt Gen. (Rtd) Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau disclosed this at an occasion of formal conferment of citizenship and presentation of certificates to foreigners who chose to become Nigerian citizens either by naturalization or registration in Abuja.“In line with Mr President’s ”˜CHANGE’ Policy hinged on the three cardinal principles of anti-corruption, security and job creation, the Ministry of Interior ensured that all deserving persons were recommended to Mr President for approval,” Dambazau said.According to the minister, the approval of citizenship is in agreement with government’s intention to facilitate the process of business in the country, and charged them to project the image of the country favorably both at home and abroad.Gen. Dambazau said the event coincided with the implementation of the provision of Chapter III, Sections 26 and 27 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), after having received over 500 applications from foreigner willing to have “the grant of citizenship of Nigeria by either Naturalization or Registration”.He appreciated the awardees represented by 14 persons, and encouraged them to obey existing laws and do all they can to help Nigeria rank among the advanced countries of the world. “Your contributions and support towards nation building will certainly promote citizenry sustainability. For this reason, you are enjoined to use all the rights and privileges within the ambit of the law, by the new status bestowed upon as Nigerians, while at the same time fulfilling your fundamental obligations and responsibilities to Nigeria.” The minister said.The Director Overseeing the Office of the Permanent Secretary (DOOPS),  Muhammadu Maccido, also encouraged the recipients of the citizenship award to abide by the governing laws and tradition of their new country.Speaking on behalf of other award recipients, Dr Lambert Shumbusho, said they would endeavor to do as demanded of them.Among those who were honoured with the citizenship award is the wife of former governor of Edo State, Mrs Lara Oshiomhole.
