NPC Boss Scores Birth Registration Centres Low
By
The NPC chair said this in Abuja at a forum sponsored by the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday.
He gave his support to building more birth registration centres so that all new births in the country could be effectively accounted for.
This, according to the NPC boss will also assist the commission to document a comprised information on all births nationwide, without any exception.Mr. Duruiheoma stated: “If we have enough centres to collect the records of all births and deaths in the country, undergoing census may become a thing of the past in our nation.“When we have the data of births and deaths, all we have to do is use this to update the population number by adding in the place of birth and subtracting in the place of deaths.
“If we have accurate data of births and deaths, the Federal Government will not need to spend billions of naira conducting head count in the country.
“Apart from the unavailability of adequate birth registration centres, paucity of funds has generally made the exercise unsuccessful.”
In the area of funding, the NPC chair said the commission need a sum of N222 billion to be able to perform its obligatory function, come next census date.
The budget amount, which had been presented to the federal government, the NPC boss said, will take care of the pre-census, census and post census phase.
However, Duruiheoma affirmed that a meagre amount of just N33 billion was provided for in favour of the commission in the 2017 budget.
Presently, the chair of the census body noted that no substantial amount has reached the commission for the 2018 population census. This, in other words, the chairman said, has limited the commission to documenting data in files other than computer-based means, as practiced in other climes around the world.Without relenting, the chairman maintained that the commission would keep on counselling the government on the necessities with the expectation that it would respond desirably.Discover more from NewsBreakers
