The National Universities Commission has authorised that medical students in Nigeria spend eleven years in the university. The authorisation was disclosed during a presentation titled: “Development of Medical Education: Prospects and Challenges”, by Professor Chiedu Mafiana on behalf of the commission’s Executive Secretary Professor Julius Okojie. The commission revealed its plans at the maiden matriculation and the inauguration of the University of Medical Science, Ondo State. According to Mafiana; “The first four years will be spent studying basic sciences in the university while the next seven years will be spent at the medical school”. He added that it would aid the students’ psychological growth and prepare them for the future.” Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State who graced the presentation expressed his confidence about the school, stating that the university should make the most of the medical complex around the institution in conducting medical research. Mimiko reiterated: “It is our hope and belief that it will provide sound scientific, technological and professional training to address identified health needs and problems, solve them within the context of community and national needs and sustainable development.”
