Nigeria’s Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has commended the Nigerian military for the recapture of Sambisa Forest, the stronghold of boko haram insurgents in Borno state.

Professor Osinbajo made the commendation in his remarks at an inter-denominational church service held at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, as part of activities to mark the 2017 Armed Forces and Remembrance Day.He said soldiers occupied a special place in the gospel of Jesus Christ.“The reasons Christians are described as soldiers in the scriptures are the attributes of unity, brotherhood, loyalty, discipline; the most important being the willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice for the country,” he said.The Vice-President said “another reason why Christians are compared to soldiers is because life itself is a warfare and a battle between good and evil; between light and darkness where the physical is determined by the spiritual.”“And today, as we celebrate our fallen heroes, we do so with the wisdom of the scripture.  First, the physical battle they fought for our freedom, for justice””and recently, against terrorism and hate””are battles fought to ensure that good will prevail over evil.  The victorious fight of our military against the evil ideology of boko haram is evidence of the ascendancy of good over evil,” Osinbajo stated.He said the Nigerian military had in the past few years, battled  an ideology that supported the killing of children in beds as well as the rape and abduction of women and young girls, pointing out that many of the soldiers died in the fight, leaving widows, widowers and fatherless children.Professor Osinbajo said the Nigerian military had during the course of these battles celebrated brotherhood and unity without caring about their ethnicity and religious differences.“Against boko haram, they stood side by side; Christians, Muslims.  They stood and stood united.  From the north east, south east, north west, north central, south west and south south.”He said the military are today also in southern Kaduna, irrespective of religion and tribe, to defeat hate, intolerance, and terrorsm; prepared to lay down their lives to prove that the country belongs to all of us.”In his sermon, the Prelate of the Methodist Church, Nigeria, His Eminence, Dr. Chukwuemeka Uche, said the service was a solemn occasion to remember Nigeria’s fallen heroes and to pray for those still in service.He advised soldiers to remain faithful and committed to the peace and unity of Nigeria.Uche also told restive groups to embrace dialogue and work for the peace and unity of Nigeria.Among those who attended the service were the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen; the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr David Babachir Lawal; members of the National Assembly and top military officers.Source: Agencies
