Pakistan to Deport “Green-Eyed Afghan Girl”

Nearly 31 years after a photo shoot to fame that became the cover of National geographic magazine in 1985, Sharbat Gula will be facing charges of fraudulent behaviour. The same picture responsible for her fame is the same calling for her deportation.The “green-eyed Afghan girl” as she is popularly called, now in her 40s is to be deported after living in Pakistan for many years. A Pakistani court ruled against her for having obtained a Pakistani card illegitimately where she lived with her husband and children.This is coming on the heels of the Pakistan government rounding up of Afghans with illegal documents who crossed the border during when Afghan was in a state of unrest.Sharbat, who was imprisoned last week, would be released in a couple of days after completing her jail sentence for 15 days after which she would pay a fine of about 100,000 rupees.Afghan official, Jalili confirms her deportation coming Monday. He said “the government and the people of Afghanistan await Sharbat Gula with great emotion and will welcome her very warmly.”Sharbat Gula who lost her husband some years ago had been living in Nasir Bagh refugee camp in Pakistan during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan before crossing over to.
