Paucity of fund delays supply of national IDs

The delay in issuance of the new National ID cards to Nigerians is being addressed by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), as it is working hard to overcome the challenges. The Director-General of the commission, Mr Aliyu Aziz, spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja about the insufficiency of funds necessitating a delay of production and issuance of the cards. The commission, Aziz said, has already received innumerable complaints on the delay from concerned Nigerians who had registered long ago but are awaiting the issuance of the permanent cards. It was recalled that in 2016 that over 750,000 cards were unclaimed while at same time, about 300,000 cards had been given out to Nigerians. The News Agency of Nigeria reported that millions of Nigerians have undergone the screening exercise, issued with the temporary National Identity Number, but presently awaiting the collection of the permanent Identity card.Aziz ascertained that the commission can register as many as 300million citizens with its facility. However, he said the National Identity Number (NIN) is more important than the card.NIN is a unique 11-digit number given to a person at the end of a successful registration into the national identity database (NIDB).Aziz, clarified that the NIN facilitates the grouping of all records of persons in the database and is employed in verifying the identity of each registrant.“What is important is digital certification. We have always emphasized that NIN is the most important.“So, once you have the NIN that is okay. But we are doing our best to issue the cards.“It is part of measures to create a comprehensive national identity database to drive national development planning and to prevent both double identity and identity fraud,’’ he said.Reports had it that NIMC started the registration exercise in September 2010 and commence supply of a multipurpose card in 2013.
