Police foils students protest, arrests three

By

The Kogi state command of the Nigeria Police and the Nigerian Army Monday suppressed the students of tertiary institutions in the state, who were protesting the continued closure of their schools. Arrests made by security agencies had three of the students (a female from Kogi Poly, Lokoja and two male from Kogi University, Anyigba), while they were observing the peaceful protest at the NATACO junction on the Lokoja-Abuja highway. The students’ protest was carried out under the “Re-open our School Movement” tag on major roads at about 7.15 am, while they were chanting their readiness to return to school with the slogan: “We want to go back to school. We are not here for violence “.Many placards displaying inscriptions such as “We are tired of staying at home, 2015 and 2016 students have missed the first batch of NYSC mobilisation and please Re-open our institution”. The students blocked the highway while the protest lasted before the police was involved to restore peace. Officers of the Nigerian Army allegedly intervened with the attendant molestation of the students. The arrest of students was made by the police when the students reconvened for a procession. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), William Aya, who confirmed the arrest of three people, said the students’ protest was dispersed because they were obstructing traffic on a major highway linking the north and south. And he said those arrested were screened to ensure their true status. The PRO further said the school authorities of those concerned would be contacted for due identification.
