Pope Heads to Mexican Trouble Spots

By Correspondent

Pope Francis will on Tuesday visit Mexico’s turbulent western state of Michoacan, where the cult-like Knights Templar drug cartel, and its pseudo-Messianic leader terrorized the population until farmers revolted against them. The 79-year-old pope will visit the state’s capital, Morelia, for a mass with priests, nuns and seminarians, followed by a tour of the cathedral and a second mass with Mexican youths in a stadium. Nuns milled about the city on Monday, while Catholic faithfuls brought sleeping bags to spend the night outside the cathedral to wait for the Pope. A heavy police contingent guarded the colonial centre.
