Principals identify political interference as bane of education
By
The All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), affirmed Friday that issues such as political meddling and poor funding had left the education sector in ruins.
The statement is contained in the communique released at the closure of its 60th annual congress in Port Harcourt.
The theme of the congress is “Political Interference In Education: A Threat to Effective School Management.”
The principals identified general poor funding across the country, and further said that most of the fund for the sector was misappropriated by government officials.
They also noted the abnormality in appointments, postings and promotion of teachers, a situation they said have drifted from merit to political affiliation.
The body also noted high disregard for continuity in the formulation of educational policies, citing the unnecessary interfering in school discipline by political individuals.
They were displeased with politically motivated programs namely, free education and free feeding to take precedence over payment of teachers’ salaries and provision of infrastructure.
“The ethos of diligence, sacrifice and self-dignity is fast losing its place among heads of schools in Nigeria,” they said.
