Nigeria’s Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, gave the figure while explaining the rationale behind the planned closure of Abuja airport for six weeks to the senate.Senator Sirika said the N1.2billion earlier earmarked in the 2015 budget was not for a comprehensive repair work.He said thorough integrity tests conducted on the 3.6km runway last year by experts from three different international consultants on runways constructions and repairs have resulted in more comprehensive estimates. The Minister however failed to convince the senate that the planned closure of the airport for six weeks with the attendant movement of flights to Kaduna Airport was the best available option. He cited safety of air passengers as the reason for the planned total closure of the Airport and subsequent movement of flights operations to Kaduna. Many senators believe the attendant cost of moving flight operations to Kaduna airport can suffice for the construction of a second runway. The Senate adjourned deliberations on the Abuja airport runway project to Tuesday January 17, 2017.The Senate asked Senator Sirika to re-appear before it on the adjourned date along with the Minister of Works, Babatunde Fashola, and the construction firm to handle the planned project (Julius Berger). The Aviation Minister was also requested to bring estimated cost of the proposed repair work and that of the second runway. The Senate also invited the Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE) for Tuesday’s meeting in order to extensively explore the alternative options to the proposed repair work.
