Senate pressured to restore Babachir Lawal as SGF

By

Nigeria’s Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has opened up about pressures from different quarters regarding the reinstatement of Babachir Lawal as Secretary to the Government of the Federation.Saraki made this disclosure during recent plenary following the adoption of a senate committee report indicting the SGF of impropriety in handling government contracts in the northeast. The final report on the alleged misconduct of Lawal was adopted and agreement reached to send resolution of the committee to President Muhammadu Buhari so as to expedite action. This was in a bid to stall the re-instatement of the suspended SGF as the report indicted Lawal and recommended his prosecution. “The quality of the report, despite political pressure that we know exists, is highly commendable. The facts and document available to the committee are damning. The problem in the North East will not get better unless we do something urgently.“What is happening in the North East calls to question, activities of the anti-graft agencies.“I don’t think that Babachir is the beginning of corruption in that agency (PINE). The system made it possible for this kind of looting. It is not just about Babachir. It is a systemic problem that must be tackled. It also calls for stringent oversight,” Saraki said.Bottom of Form
