Sharapova plays Vinci in Stuttgart opener, Radwanska in waiting

Next week’s Stuttgart’s tournament will feature Maria Sharapova engaging veteran Italian Roberta Vinci in their opening match. This a come-back for five-time champion, Sharapova, after a 15-month doping ban.She was controversially issued a wildcard in the clay-court tournament after her suspension made her forfeit her ranking.Chances are that the 30-year-old Russian scale through her opener on Wednesday, for a qualification to meet Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska, one of her toughest rivals, in the second round. Radwanska tongue-lashed Sharapova in an interview on Friday, when she said the sports poster athlete should not be given wild cards, noting her doping suspension as reason.“This kind of entry (wild cards) into the tournament should apply to players who dropped in the ranking because of injury, illness or some other random event. Not for those suspended for doping. Maria should recover some other way, starting with smaller events,” Radwanska asserted.“So far she hasn’t been invited to slams in Paris (French Open) and London (Wimbledon) and in my opinion that’s how it should remain. She should win her spot by playing well.”Sharapova was served a two-year ban having tested positive for meldonium at the 2016 Australian Open but later had her suspension reduced to 15months.
