Steep Your Life in God

Steep Your Life in God

By James Hughes

Matthew 6:31-33, MSG What I’m trying to do here is to get you relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God, and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.

The writer of the Message translation of the Bible pictorially gives the message of “Seeking first the Kingdom of God” as the process of steeping, soaking or imbuing our life in God. To ‘Steep’ is a chemical term used to mean “To soak an item (or to be soaked) in liquid in order to gradually add or remove components to or from the item.” For instance, skins are steeped in a tanning solution to create leather. In this process, the quality of the tannic acid is added to the animal hide which turns it into a leather. In life, we all are placed between two alternatives: whether to steep our lives in God or the world. You have to be soaked in one at a time. Just as the skin takes on the quality of a tannic acid to become leather, you take on the life or quality of whatever you soak yourself into. Unfortunately, being preoccupied with getting in order not to miss out of what is tagged the enjoyment of life, many have chosen to passionately follow after the frivolous human concerns and anxieties that are obtainable in the world. Although the hearts, desire and delight of such are far away from God, they still find a ground to justify their ungodly pursuits in God, in an attempt to be in Christ and at the same time please the world. This is not possible.I’ve had times when I was despised and scorned by people around of being boring and dull because of my lack of interest in some issues considered by many to be important, but not rooted in God. Sincerely, meditating on these daily human concerns, I feel that I am missing out in some things that seems normal and natural to human existence. It is the fear of missing out in these worldly pleasures and be tagged fanatics that drive us to compromise our love for God.
Living Bible Colossians 3:1-2  Since you became alive again, so to speak, when Christ arose from the dead, now set your sights on the rich treasures and joys of heaven where he sits beside God in the place of honor and power. Let heaven fill your thoughts; don’t spend your time worrying about things down here.
Don’t worry about missing out! Don’t spend your time worrying about things down here! Those needs, worries, anxieties and concerns will be met in due time. However, God does not want us to fuss around with getting them, but that we should respond to God’s ability to provide them by our trust in Him. He does not want anything to contest with our desire for Him. Our thoughts and passions should be filled with the concerns and purposes of God and being conformed into His life.

Seek God first

As we steep our life in God-reality, God-initiative and God-provisions, we are transformed into Him, and He foot our bills concerning worries of this life. Never think you are missing out by following after God. You are not missing out. In Him is all riches and enjoyment of life. However, don’t seek Him for the goods, seek Him for love, and you will have your needs met. Steep your life in God!
