Strike Action: Nasarawa University Council Meeting Fails to Reach Agreement

By Correspondent

Dr Theophilus Lagi, the Chairman of the Nasarawa State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has disclosed that the union was not able to reach any agreement with the Governing Council of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, because none of the parties was willing to shift grounds on the issues that led to the strike action. This is the second meeting since the industrial action commenced. NewsBreakers gathered that the university authority was not willing to compromise its position, especially on the issues of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) of the union and funding of the institution which forced both parties to end talk without meaningful understanding. After dialoguing for over three hours with members of the council in Keffi, Lagi who also addressed the press called on his members to continue staying at home until all their demands are met. Both parties could not resolve all contentious issues and urged members of the union to keep faith with the struggle. Logi added; “We have deliberated and considered the issues on their merit individually and holistically, but we have not been able to reach any meaningful concession on how these issues can be addressed, especially as regards the issues of funding and the EAA.” The Registrar of the University, Dalhatu Mamman said: “We had a fruitful discussion, the council was desirous that academic activities returned to normal.”
