The Return of Osoba

The Return of Osoba

By Correspondent

It is not in doubt, that the former Ogun State governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba moved away from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) shortly after he ran into crisis with the incumbent governor of the state, Senator Ibikunle Amosun. It is however not a surprise to political observers since the defection according to them has become the usual thing in Nigerian politics. Unarguably, the returnee Chief Osoba who is a foundation member of the party had moved on to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) not too long after he had a confrontation with Governor Amosun before the 2015 general elections. Interestingly, after his departure his deputy, Segun Adesegun; three senators and six members of the House of Representatives, including Osoba’s son, Olumide, also dumped the APC for the SDP. As he departed the APC at that time, it was gathered that Osoba who threatened brimstone and fire made a vow never to forgive Amosun. Information has it that the duo’s misunderstanding hinged on the wellbeing of the APC in the state. With deferent stories from varying sources as to why Osoba left in the first instance, the former governor was said in one of the versions to have been interested in what is termed a more inclusive executive to accommodate the people who worked for the party, to ensure that Amosun emerged victorious at the 2011 governorship election. At a point in time, there were moves by some eminent leaders of the ruling APC alongside traditional rulers to bring together both Osoba and Amosun. But this amounted to nothing as Chief Osoba was said to have insisted on not forgiving the incumbent governor. On one of the occasions, and while speaking to some members of the party from the 236 wards of Ogun State at a consultative forum in May 2014, before his defection to the SDP, Osoba argued, ”˜Your executive members came to me, they said they don’t trust me again, they said they don’t believe in me again, that I will soon forgive and say everything has been settled. They said I will tell them that some Obas (traditional rulers) have appealed to me. ”˜When they said that I asked them again if they have fully concluded and we went into an inner meeting and inside there, I vowed to them that I will not forgive or reconcile with anybody. As I stand before you today, I swear before God and Jesus Christ, my Lord, I promise you all that the issue of forgiveness is no more. If you stand firmly as a warrior, that is enough for me. ”˜If you are ready, there is no more room for reconciliation. If thousands of people prostrate, it is what you want that I will do, it is what you say that I will say; I will stand where you stand. I want to appeal to you, don’t be distracted. ”˜They said they have given them the party structure, leave them. Are you dragging the party with them? It is those that have people that have the party.’ In his explanation over his return to the APC, Osoba said it was the Alake of Egbaland, Dr Adedotun Gbadebo, and the Awujale of Ijebuland, Dr Sikiru Adetona that facilitated his coming back to the ruling party.
