TOPAN Lauds Federal Government’s Action on Tomato Revolution

By James Hughes

The Tomatoes and Orchards Processors Association of Nigeria (TOPAN) has lauded the Federal Government for its decision to revolutionize tomato production in Nigeria.

Managing Director of the association, Mr Bola Oyeleke gave the commendation on Wednesday, in a meeting with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in Abuja.

According to Oyeleke, the Federal Government’s commitment to repositioning the tomato sub-sector in order to establish the country’s self-sufficiency in tomato production and consumption was worthy of note and commendation.

He stressed that the meeting with the CBN was included in the objective to launch a tomato revolution in Nigeria. He said it was necessary to boost production and ensure more processing plants to help generate employment among other benefits.

Oyeleke remarked, “It is important for farmers, particularly those in rural areas to form clusters or join cooperatives to access credit facilities. This is part of the sensitization we will get involved in, to prepare farmers and other stakeholders to enable them to benefit from any intervention in the sub-sector.

“We will also work with our partners to ensure the availability of good seeds, fertilizers, and other inputs. TOPAN wants to see more youths embrace horticulture, especially tomatoes.

“When the revolution starts farmers are expected to take advantage of the opportunity to boost production.”
