University of Ibadan may Reopen in Next Few Weeks- VC

By

The students of the prestigious University of Ibadan have something to cheer over if promise by the Vice Chancellor, Idowu Olayinka, to reopen the institution in the next few weeks is fulfilled.Olayinka is hopeful that the present peace offers by him would stabilize the situation of things on campus. However, the school don stated that the authority would not hesitate to punish erring students who violate school laws.Recall the school management had announced on June 23 that normal academic activities resumes July 2. However, the student union’s leader said that could only be done when issues that led to the closure are addressed. The University of Ibadan had struggled with disagreement over the use of hotplates and other electrical appliances in the hostels, amongst other unresolved differences. In the face of the university crisis, the union and its president, Ojo Aderemi were suspended.Other issues in need of attention are the reported multi-billion naira fraud and failure of the institution authorities to carry out an audit of the school’s account, which, according to the students, are unacceptable. In an interview granted, Mr Olayinka debunked the accusations but said the school is interested in dialoguing with the students in order to find a lasting solution. He was displeased by the behavior of the outlawed union leader for making inciting comments against the school management.“We have before now said it that the union leaders misled students and that was what led to the shut-down of campus,” he added.

His claims also included that the school has done all there is to ensure a healthy audit of its account, contrary to media reports.

His words: “That cannot be true, there are several committees handling issues like this and I run a transparent government. It is not a one-man show in my tenure. I am not involved in any fraud or fraudulent activities of any sort”.
