VC Says Illegal Mining is Thriving within the Varsity’s Environs

By Correspondent

The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger state, Professor Musbau Adewunmi Akanji has disclosed that illegal mining is thriving within the environs of the institution in the Gidan-Kwanu area of the Niger state capital. These illegal miners, he said, were always on ‘duty’ between the hours of 2am and 6am daily in a bid to avoid security operatives and government officials.Prof Akanji reported this in Minna on Wednesday while granting interview to the Niger state chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ).The Vice Chancellor further revealed that asides from serving as security risks to staff and students, the activities of the illegal miners were denying the country of the much-needed internal revenue, especially now that the nation is hard pressed for money. The case has since been relayed to the relevant security agencies in the state, but Akanji warned that the case should be handled without prejudice.
