Volcano Erupts in Iceland Peninsula

A volcano in southwestern Iceland has erupted, sending glowing hot lava shooting 50 metres (164ft) into the air.

It’s the fifth eruption since December on the Reykjanes peninsula – located near the country’s capital Reykjavik. A growing fissure of more than 2.5km (1.5 miles) opened up around 12:00 local time near Sundhnuksgigar, north of the village of Grindavík, authorities say

Most of the 4,000 people in Grindavík were permanently evacuated in November, before the significant eruptions began

The country’s Met Office says a fissure, approximately 2.5km (1.5 miles) in length, has opened and seems to be “growing”. The eruption occurred at around 12:00 local time (11:00 BST), reports the BBC.

The Blue Lagoon spa – one of the country’s most popular tourist resorts – has been evacuated as a precaution
