1977       Mar 9, Activist Elisabeth Kaesemann (30), a German sociologist, was abducted in Argentina. Her bullet-riddled body was later found dumped on the outskirts of Buenos Aires.1983 Mar 9, Margaret Heckler was sworn in as secretary of Health and Human Services, the same day Anne M. Burford resigned as head of the embattled Environmental Protection Agency. 1990 Mar 9, Dr. Antonia Novello (b.1944) was sworn in as the US surgeon general, becoming the first woman and the first Hispanic to hold the job. Dr. Novello became Commissioner of Health for the State of New York in 1999.1993 Mar 9, Janet Reno sailed through her confirmation hearing en route to becoming the nation’s first female attorney general.2002  Mar 9, Melissa Gilbert was elected president of the Screen Actors Guild, defeating challenger Valerie Harper.
