The certification of these communities was undertaken by Sanitation, Hygiene and Water in Nigeria (SHAWN ll), a UNICEF/DFID intervention project.Zamfara is one of six states in the country participating in the programme.Mr. Sani Gurbinbore, Programme Manager, State Rural and Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWATSAN) said the communities are from the three local government areas that participated in the programme. He said that 108 communities in Talata-Mafara local government area, 62 communities in Birnin Magaji and 95 communities in Tsafe local government areas were certified.“Our team of experts including state, local government task force committees and community laid total sanitation implementation teams went round the 265 communities that participated in the programme. After thorough investigation and scrutiny, the teams discovered that on the average, every household in these communities constructed pit latrines with hand washing materials and cover drops. The teams did not record instances of open defecation unlike in the past and that showed that the communities have stopped Open Defecation” , he said.Gurbinbore stated that an end to open defecation will reduce water and unclean environment related diseases in rural communities. He urged the certified communities to intensify efforts at maintaining their status to enable Nigeria attain the Sustainable Development Goals on water and sanitation. He also urged communities in the non participating local government areas to desist from open defecation, saying it is dangerous to health.
