US Geological Survey has announced the occurrence of a 6.2-magnitude earthquake off Papua New Guinea on Monday but there are no signs of Pacific-wide tsunami.
Agency report confirmed that the shallow vibration took place in waters nearby the thinly habited New Britain Island, some 450 kilometres (280 miles) northeast of the capital Port Moresby.
No issue of an extensive tsunami was made by Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. New Britain is known as the largest island of the Bismarck Archipelago, located east of mainland New Guinea having a population of 500,000.
It is situated on a 4,000-kilometre Pacific-Australia plate, a part of the “Ring of Fire”, notorious for seismic activity occasioned by friction of tectonic plates.
