An aircraft carrying 81 passengers on board is reported to have crashed en route its way to Medellin’s International airport leaving 76 passengers dead and 5 survivors. Among the passengers on board include a Brazilian first division football team Copa Sudamericana. According to NAN, reports are that the team was going to Colombia for a regional tournament final. Airline authorities claim that the plane carried 72 passengers and 9 crew members. The plane was operated by Lamia, a Bolivian airline charter.

The Medellin mayor, Federico Gutierrez at a local radio station at Bogota in Colombia reported that the incidence was a tragedy of huge proportions. The site of crash was difficult to access and this led to journalists being told to stay away so as to facilitate the easy entry and exit of ambulances and rescuers helping the injured to the hospital.
