Boko Haram Overtakes Isis as Deadliest Terrorist Group

The Institute for Economics and Peace has placed Boko Haram ahead of ISIS as the world’s deadliest terrorist organisation.This was contained in the third edition of the Global Terrorism Index drawn from the Global Terrorism Database (GTD).Global Terrorism Database is collated by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START), University of Maryland.Operating mainly from northeastern Nigeria, Boko Haram has also launched attacks in neighbouring countries, particularly Cameroun and Chad.Reports say 6,644 people died as a result of the activities of the terrorist group in 2014, compared to a death toll of 6,073 people attributed to ISIS within the same time frame.The Global Terrorism Index (GTD) attempts to depict the impact and scale of terrorist activities across the nations of the world.Nigeria currently has a GTD score of 8.58, following closely after Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, which have the highest score of 10.
