House of Representatives to investigate and probe the power sector and DPR over alleged malpractices

The activities of some top players in the nation’s energy sector as well as some multinational companies operating in Ogun State are set to be probed by the House of Representatives. This was based on the adoption of motions moved separately by Joseph Edionwele of PDP, Edo State, calling on the House to investigate the reoccurrence of electrical accidents in the power sector and the non-compliance with the due process in the issuance of off-shore safety permits by the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) in collaboration with a limited liability company, this was moved by Gabriel Onyenwife of APGA, Anambra.

Stephen Friday of PDP, Ondo moved for the urgent need to investigate the disconnection of electricity to communities in Akoko North-East/ North-West federal constituency of the State.Edionwele in the first motion related that the concession in various projects in the power sector to private interest has increased the rates of electricity-related accidental deaths. Also, Nigerian Electricity Regulation Commission (NERC) places the death toll at 655, apart from those who sustained injuries.He called on the House to urgently instruct and mandate the Committees on Power, Labour, Employment and Productivity to investigate the causes of the incessant electrical accidents and unsafe practices by the various Distribution Companies (DISCOs), Generating Companies (GENCOs) and Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and report back to the House in 6 weeks after investigation and also bringing an end to such an unhealthy trend.On the other hand, Onyenwife called on the investigation of the DPR in the unlawful delegation of its duties to a limited liability company, saddling it with the responsibility of issuing off-shore safety permits (OSP).
