Federal Government has been urged to declare a state of emergency on federal roads in South-South and South-East geopolitical zones. This statement is made by the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Zone B, yesterday.
It also frowned at the planned sales of the country’s national assets to address the current economic crisis, emphasising that “no wise man can lay off a viable asset of his.” NANS, in a statement by the Coordinator of the zone, Pedro Obi, expressed disappointment at the “current dilapidated status of over 90 percent of federal roads in the regions.“Notable among them are: East ”“ West Road, Benin ”“ Auchi Expressway, Ewu ”“ Onicha Ugbo Road, Port Harcourt ”“ Owerri, Onitsha ”“ Enugu Expressway, Agbor ”“Obiaruku ”“ Sapele Expressway, Enugu ”“ Umuahia ”“ Aba Expressway, Umuahia ”“ Ikot Ekpene federal roads. “We have lost many students as a result of these terrible roads and we are not ready to lose more. The Senate (of NANS Zone B) therefore, calls for an immediate intervention to ameliorate the sufferings of commuters in the regions.”While speaking on calls for sale of national assets, the statement said “The Senate of NANS Zone B unanimously supports the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria over the rejection of the sale and calls on all Nigerians to be more vigilant and committed in protection of our national heritage. “We recall that the previous assets sold never added any meaningful difference in the development of the country, rather it was the empowerment of the very few who are now also at the forefront of the current call.”
