Seventeen year-old boy risks life jail for alleged rape

A 17-year-old boy could be jailed for life if the court finds him guilty of having defiled a minor.The accused appeared in Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s’ Court on Monday for allegedly having a carnal knowledge of his neighbour’s daughter.The accused who resides at 7 Akinsemoyin Surulere, is an apprentice to a clergyman and is standing trial on a count charge of felony.According to the Prosecutor, Inspector Clifford Ogu, the offence was committed in January at the suspect’s residence.He said the mother of the seven-year-old noticed she has been messed up after sighting blood stains on her.“When the girl’s mother asked her what happened, she mentioned the name of the accused and when she undressed her, she noticed her daughter had been defiled.“The girl’s mother confronted the accused and he ran away from the house; hence, the case was reported at the police station,” he stated.The Police, according to Ogu’s statement, went after the accused.He said such act contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.Section 137 states that any person, who had unlawful sexual intercourse of a child, is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for life.The accused has been granted N350,000 bail with two sureties in like sum by Chief Magistrate, Mrs Taiwo Akanni and the case was adjourned for May 31.
