The Defence Secretary, United States of  America, Lyold Austin on August 3, 2024, press rescinded a plea deal reached with three plotters of the September 11, 2001 attacks on America. This information was contained in a memo released on August 3. The plotters were; Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Walid Bin Attash, and Mustafa – Al – Hwsawi. In the memo addressed to Susan Esacllier, the authority running milltary courts at Guantanamo Bay, he stated that she should withdraw her authority in the cases. “Responsibility for such a decision should rest with me” he stated. Susan Esacllier had signed a pretrial agreement with the plotters on Wednesday that involved exchange of guilty pleas for life imprisonment. However, in revoking this plea, Mr Lyold assumes oversight of the case, reinforcing it as a death penalty case and this has brought relief of families of victims who were angry over the case.“Effective immediately, in the exercise of my authority, I hereby withdraw from the three pretrial agreements that you signed on July 31, 2024.” the memo stated.
