Utomi Says Nigerian Political Class are Lazy

By Correspondent

Prominent political-economic pundit and public affairs commentator, Professor Pat Utomi on Wednesday insisted that the current economy woes in Nigeria were due to the lack of vision of the political class. He also added that the development policy standard in the country has remained in a shabby situation. Professor Utomi while speaking at the 2nd SMC-NRGI, media conference series 2016 with the theme Economic survival in a period of dwindling oil prices, argued that the political class in the country was replete with lazy individuals. According to him, ‘We have a lazy political class that is not visionary enough to see the need to reposition the country in the right policies that will shore up growth and stability in our economy without the sense of playing selfishly. ‘The play in this is such that corruption has created a custom of people with money without the thought or foresight to create jobs for its citizens. ‘The government is more responsible for aborting progress than enhancing development for her country. ‘The media are agenda setters and development enhancer to an economy as the media is ill- equipped to cover the economy.’ In a keynote address delivered by a member of the governing board of the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiatives (NEITI), Gbenga Onayiga argued that since the country’s economy is in a bad shape, people would not be blamed for airing their frustration, particularly against the current government. He added ‘The challenges, in virtually all facets of our national life, are exerting tremendous changes in the way we do things as individuals and as a collective. ‘These socio-economic and political quacking have also forced a re-orientation of our political and social attitudes.’
