By

Mexican doctors treating the world’s heaviest man, have confirmed his gastric bypass surgery was successful. Juan Pedro Franco, who weighed almost 600kg (1,300 pounds) at one stage, was made to undergo the treatment in order to reduce his size by half and would soon do another operation, according Surgeon Jose Castaneda on Tuesday. “The surgery was quite successful. But now we have to wait and see how he responds to the (systemic) change. Let’s hope everything goes well,” Castaneda said. Castaneda also said the medical procedure has made the patient “quite delicate”, and that necessitates a close monitoring. Franco, who was initially measuring 595kg, need to shed off a chunk of his former size so he could be suitable for surgery. His medics are also concerned with his diabetes and blood pressure conditions, which should be kept under control. The operation is now set to go on after doctors were pleased with his gradual progress and motivation. Franco, however has been bedridden for years. At the time the second surgery would be conducted, in November as suggested, Franco’s stomach would have reduced and his intestines adjusted. According to Castaneda, it is important the patient improves on the psychological and nutritional sides. “If that does not happen, the entire thing will fail”. Mexico has a number of weighty individuals like Manuel Uribe, who in 2007 was known as the record bearer of world’s heaviest man at 597 kg. He died last year. Egyptian Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty, famed as the world’s bulkiest woman, was recently treated by means of gastric bypass surgery carried out on her in India. Her treatment, which included a modified diet according to her medics, helped her lose about 323 kg in three months to assume 177kg.
