A major offensive has been launched by the Syrian government from the north of Aleppo and has also captured several strategically important towns, as the ceasefire agreement continues in Geneva on Tuesday. President Bashar al-Assad’s forces took Aleppo on Monday when its troops advanced to major areas in the town. This is to his advantage as Aleppo is known to be Syria’s largest city as the troops marched through the towns of Hardatnein, Tal Jibbeen, and Deir Zaitoun. Russian air forces assisting the Syrian government made heavy strikes on the city, making hundreds of people flee from their homes. The offensive has been condemned by opposition leaders in Switzerland, saying that it shows the government is not committed to finding a peaceful resolution to the civil war. The US Secretary of State, John Kerry, also warned on Tuesday while speaking in Rome on countering the advances of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group said: “the situation on the ground for the Syrian people is unfathomable”. “We haven’t seen a catastrophe like this since World War II, and it’s unfolding before our eyes.” The ceasefire in Geneva continues on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Staffan de Mistura, who is the UN special envoy to Syria, was to meet representatives of Assad’s government.
