Far from the believe that sickle cell disease has no cure as recent report has it that an American woman, Iesha Thomas is the first person to have experienced a known cure. The disease which affects 1 in every 500 African Americans locally may soon be a thing of the past. The 33-year-old Iesha Thomas has been living with the disease, which gradually became malignant. She was reported to have suffered a health challenge during the birth her daughter which necessitated a continuous blood transfusion and two hip replacements caused by bone damage.Sickle cell disease is known to be painful. The defect causes the sickled blood cells to supply insufficient oxygen to body tissues resulting in serious pain, stroke and organ damage.Recent report of Thomas case is indeed a huge development in world health, being the first occurrence in the Midwest.“I just want to be at home with my daughter every day and every night,” Thomas remarked. The efforts of medics at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Science System paved the way through when they carried out a medication process to subdue her immune system allowing for a minute amount of total body radiation prior to the stem cell transplant. This process permits the patient’s bone marrow to cohabit with that of the donor. Gradually, the stem cells will take over the bone marrow’s function of producing normal and healthy red blood cells.
