Why Dasuki, Kanu Cannot Be Released Now- Buhari

The Buhari-led government, on Wednesday, gave insight to the reason why former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, and the coordinator of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, remain in the custody in spite of many court orders directing their release. President Buhari, while speaking at his maiden Presidential Media Chat in Abuja, insisted that the two accused persons cannot be allowed to enjoy any form of freedom as a result of the enormity of their offenses. According to the President, “If you see the atrocities these people committed against this country, we can’t allow them to jump bail. “Dasuki was simply sharing government’s money the way he liked. They would just say to Central Bank give so and so, 40 billion Naira just like that; 40 billion! “It would be bad to allow Dasuki travel to London to see his doctor, what of the over two million people displaced; most of them orphans whose fathers have been killed, what type of government do you want to run? We cannot allow that.” President Buhari further revealed that in spite of the fact that he has two international passports; one for Britain and the other for Nigeria, Kanu did not use any of them to come into Nigeria. He further insisted that Kanu allegedly smuggled in equipment with which he came to preach hate messages. It would be recalled that Dasuki is currently on trial over alleged diversion and disbursement of over $2.2 billion dollars slated for arms procurement to fight Boko Haram, to politicians and cronies. On his part, Kanu is championing the campaign for an independent nation of Biafra. He is currently facing charges that touch on treasonable felony. Meanwhile, on the Zaria Massacre, President Buhari insisted that he would not pass any comment on the Shi’ites killings until he receives the reports of investigations by the police and the Kaduna State Government. The President explained that he was in touch with the governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, and that the president of Iran had also called to ask about the crisis. “I told him [Iranian president] we have a system of investigation as a government. This happened in one city out of 36, and the governor visited the scene. As the head of the federal government, I have to wait for the official report from the Kaduna State government from their investigations before I comment”. The president said. However, Buhari condemned the Islamic group for, “creating a state within a state. The President further maintained that members of the community in Zaria had also spoken to the media about their “sufferings” for 20 years at the hands of the Shi’ites. He said, “I expect the Kaduna State government will bring the report on the inquiry because the crisis happened in its domain. There are all sorts of allegations. So, we just have to wait for the report. “To be fair to the both sides, we have to wait for the report of the inquiry. “In any incident where lives and property were lost there is a standard way of doing things and people would be asked to come and give evidence.”
